Speech Language Therapist Career

Speech-language pathology is the treatment for the improvement or cure of communication disorders, including speech, language, and swallowing disorders. A speech disorder refers to a problem with the actual production of sounds, whereas a language disorder refers to a difficulty understanding or putting words together to communicate ideas. Speech pathologists work with patients who have a variety of speech-related disorders. They also assist patients with voice, swallowing, language and communication problems. Problems that a Speech Pathologist works with include, stuttering, swallowing difficulties, bad pitch and strong accents. Speech Pathologists help individuals prevent or overcome communication problems.

Eligibility for Speech Language Therapist

Educational Qualifications:
Most Speech Pathology jobs require Master of Science in Speech Therapy as the minimum educational requirement. Speech-language pathology courses cover anatomy, physiology, and the development of the areas of the body involved in speech, language, and swallowing; the nature of disorders; principles of acoustics; and psychological aspects of communication. Graduate students also learn to evaluate and treat speech, language, and swallowing disorders and receive supervised clinical training in communication disorders.

Personal Qualifications:
  • Should be able to effectively communicate diagnostic test results.
  • Able to approach problems objectively and be supportive.
  • Patience and compassion and good listening skills.

Job Prospects for Speech Language Therapists

The job opportunities for speech therapists continue to rise in India due to the increase in the level of awareness. People would often ignore or overlook certain speech and hearing defects but now knowing that a remedy exists they are increasingly seeking the services of speech therapists. Social welfare departments, hospitals, non government organizations and even schools hire the services of speech therapists in India.
