Photonics
Photonics is the technology of generating and
harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum
unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission,
deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and
instruments, lasers and other light sources, fibre optics, electro-optical
instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated
systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy
generation to detection to communications and information processing.Photonics
is the science and technology of generating, controlling, and detecting
photons, particularly in the visible light and near infra-red spectrum.
Photonics as a science is closely related to quantum optics and
optoelectronics with somewhat unclear boundaries. "Quantum
optics" often means fundamental research, and "photonics"
often means more application-related research. Scientists, engineers
and technicians with training in phtotonics and related technologies
are in high demand. There is and will continue to be a big global
demand for skilled people with photonics training. This leads to
exciting, rewarding and highly paid careers. |
