The Bangalore University was founded on July 10, 1964 as a federal univ with jurisdiction extended to the greater Bangalore city. Initially, the university was built around two premier centers of learning, The Central College and The University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering. With the promulgation of the Karnataka State Universities Ordinance 1975,which aimed at bringing uniform law for all the Universities in the State, the univ lost its federal character and became an affiliating university offers regular & correspondence courses (Distance education)
The State of Karnataka promoted Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) in 1996 to focus distinctly on a better planned development of health science education. The University rightly set its mission as – Right to rightful health science education – to meet the health care needs of the country. Every development initiative of the University since its inception reflects the spirit of this mission in practice. RGUHS was the secondHealth Science University to be constituted through an Act of Legislation by the State. Turned ten on June 01, 2006 with 630 affiliated colleges running UG and PG courses in Medicine, Dentistry, Ayurveda, Homoeopathy, Pharmacy, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences, Unani Medicine and in numerous paramedical fields. It awards higher degrees in emerging super specialty areas. The innovations of the University have earned her a unique place among Indian Health Science
