Charan Singh University (formerly, Meerut University) was established
in 1966, to cater to the needs of higher education in western Uttar
Pradesh. The University celebrated its silver jubilee in 1991 and
now it is one of the premier educational institutions of the country.
It has a vast campus outside the city in a pollution-free environment
which sprawls over 219 acres of land with vast playgrounds and experimental
fields, botanical garden, rose garden with life-size statue of the
late Prime Minister Ch.Charan Singh, gymnasium, indoor stadium,
well equipped library, administrative block, spacious auditorium,
guest house, community centre and medical centre. The various teaching
departments under different faculties are housed in spacious buildings
and have well-equipped laboratories.It was the first University
in the country to introduce the M.Phil. programme. A distinct feature
of the academic programme is the semester system and continuous
evaluation of the students through quizzes, tests, and seminars.
The academic programme exposes the students to practical aspects
through seminars, group discussions and lectures of experts invited
from other institutions. The University has always been proud of
its alumni who are occupying high positions of great responsibilities
and distinction in educational and research institutions in India
and abroad, administrative positions in the industries, defence
and civil services. The recognition of the University is due to
the efforts of well-qualified and committed faculty members who
have been providing quality education to bright postgraduate M.Phil.,
Ph.D. students. The University has also made a mark in the field
of sports and our students, in their achievements, are second to
none.
Our students are doing very well in NET, GATE,
ARS and GRE examinations and also in I.A.S., P.C.S. and other administrative
services and national examinations. The University Campus imparts
Post-graduate education in the faculties of Agriculture, Arts, Education,
Science and Management. It runs several research programmes in these
Departments. It also provides quality education in technology and
computer studies. The University also runs Advanced Diploma and
Certificate Courses in languages like Russian, French, German and
Sanskrit. Prof. S.P. Ojha, Vice Chancellor of the University is
well known for his academic achievements and administrative skills.
He proposes to establish the Ch. Charan Singh Rural Development
Research Institute and an Institute of Home Science in the University
Campus. The University plans to start the Departments of Geography,
Geology, Biochemistry, Defence Studies and Library Science very
