Kanchipuram
Kanchipuram is on the main Chennai to Bangalore road, 76 km south-west of
Chennai. It is one of the seven sacred cities of India. Of the original
1000 temples, there are about 200 left. Arts, literature, music and dance
prospered when Kanchipuram became the Pallava capital. Some 50 years ago
Kanchipuram weavers began making pure silk saris. Today, Kanchipuram is
famous for its handwoven silk fabrics.

Some of the famous temples in Kanchipuram are :
Kailasanatha Temple: This is the oldest temple of Shiva
in Kanchi which was built in late 7th century by the Pallava king.
Sri Ekambaranathar Temple: This temple is dedicated to
Shiva and is one of the largest temples in Kanchi. The outer stone wall
and 59m high gopuram were constructed by Krishnadevaraya in 1509.
Kamakshi Amman Temple: This temple is dedicated to goddess
Parvathi.
Devarajaswami Temple: This monument is dedicated to Lord
Vishnu. It was built by Vijayanagars.
Vaikunta Perumal Temple: This temple was built shortly
after the Kailasanatha temple which was dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
